England

The fact that Southgate and his squad reached the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup as well as the final of the Euro 2020 tournament has raised the bar for what may be expected of them in the future. Southgate’s critics, on the other hand, say that the way he plays it safe keeps one of the most talented groups of English players in sports history from reaching their full potential.

In point of fact, June’s poor performances (four games that featured no wins, no goals from open play and two defeats to Hungary, the second of which was England’s worst defeat on home soil since 1928, which was partly explained by an exhausted and heavily-rotated squad) have created disappointment among the fans and created doubts about the capabilities of Southgate. In addition, the fans are beginning to question whether or not Southgate is the right person to lead the team.

If this is proved by having strong results against Germany and Italy in September, then both the fans and the players will need to have their trust restored.

TACTICS

It is probable that England’s debacle against Hungary, in which manager Gareth Southgate started two forward midfielders in a 4-3-3 system, has enhanced Southgate’s trust in the 3-4-3 configuration that was used to start the Euro 2020 final. A potential possibility is the 4-2-3-1 formation that was utilized against Germany in Munich.

Even though Southgate’s team made it to the semi-finals of the World Cup and won silver at Euro 2020, that hasn’t stopped the criticism from getting worse.
