Netherlands

The Dutch national team got off to a rough start in qualifying, suffering a 4-2 defeat against Turkey, and the prospect of missing out on the World Cup became increasingly likely.

But after a dismal performance at Euro 2020, head coach Frank de Boer decided to step down. Louis van Gaal was the only person the Dutch Football Association could put their faith in to right the ship.

Following a string of disappointing results, everything came down to the last match. Van Gaal led his squad through qualification despite the fact that he was physically disabled due to a broken hip. Many great players, like De Vrij, De Ligt, Koopmeiners, Gravenberch, and Gakpo, are not guaranteed a spot in the starting lineup. However, Van Gaal’s final decision is still being awaited.

TACTICS

Van Gaal has changed the formation of the Netherlands’ team from 4-3-3 to 5-3-2, just as he did before the 2014 World Cup, when they ended in third place. The veteran coach would want to see more stability in the defensive unit, and he also feels that he does not have enough wingers who are talented enough to play with three up front.

Due to his ongoing health issues, Van Gaal has decided to step down as manager of the Dutch national team after the World Cup.

Virgil van Dijk

A commanding center defender and captain, who unfortunately did not participate in Euro 2020 due to injury, will be essential both on and off the playing field.
